Country: Spain
Region: Rioja
Varietal: Tempranillo, Graciano, Mazuelo
Vintage: 2009
Body: full
Alcohol: 13.5%
The folks at Campo Viejo combine their love of architecture, wine & sustainability with a state-of-the-art facility that allows them to work in a traditional way, while minimizing energy and water consumption and reducing emissions. Much of the winery is underground to minimize its impact on the landscape and maintain a consistent temperature and humidity.

This Rioja Reserva is 85% Tempranillo, 10% Graciano and 5% Mazuelo. It has spent 18 months aging both in oak and in the bottle. We get bing cherry, leather & fig on the nose, with a palate that is full & spicy, but clean.

Luberri Orlegi • Rioja

Country: Spain
Region: Rioja
Varietal: Tempranillo
Vintage: 2013
Body: full
Alcohol: 13.5
Florentino Martinez Monje --owner and winemaker for Luberri -- has a non-interventionist approach to his vineyards. He prefers the fruit to grow naturally in accordance with the microclimate in Elciego, a town within Rioja Alevesa. He keeps yields low, utilizes whole-cluster fermentation for some of the grapes, uses indigenous yeasts, and ensures that the fruit is concentrated and healthy. Orlegi is a return to the traditional light, fruit-forward wines of Rioja Alavesa.
We get nice notes of leather and tar on the nose with fresh red and dark berry. On the palate the fruit pops with spice and light acidity to balance and nice weight and light tannins. This is a classic, old-world Tempranillo from Rioja for everyday drinking.

Fuso • Barbera

Country: Italy
Region: Marca Obertenga
Varietal: Barbera
Vintage: 2011
Body: Full
Alcohol: 13%
How does this sound: Natural, sustainably grown, unfiltered, non-fined, wild yeast fermentation...essentially as pure as it can be, allowing the land and grapes to speak for themselves.
We get charming cranberry and raspberry fruit with nice texture and weight, finishing with light tannins. This wine is elegant and rustic. It avoids taking itself too seriously, but remains interesting and smart. Finally, a wine you can play video games with while discussing philosophy.

Quinta do Tedo • Douro

Country: Portugal
Region: Douro
Varietal: Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca, Tinto Roriz
Vintage: 2009
Body: full
Alcohol: 14.5
Quinta do Tedo is located in an ecological reserve, bordered to the north by the Douro and to the south by the Tedo, in the heart of an UNESCO World Heritage site. This organic red blend is 50% touriga nacional, 30% touriga franca and 20% tinta roriz.
Considering these grapes are known for making the port we know and love, the nose has some raisined, port-like notes along with tobacco spice and black currant. The palate mirrors the nose flavor-wise, and adds some velvety tannins and just enough acid to balance.
